Jason spoke of free software available online, such as
http://portableapps.com/
http://sourceforge.net/
http://www.freewaregenius.com/
Good to know that there are alternatives to buying expensive software. A good example is OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.
I learnt that you can find deleted files on a hard drive - yourself (No tech needed!) by downloading a free application from a openware/opensource site. For instance from www.portableapps.com this is an application called ERASER PORTABLE that can be downloaded and used to retrieve deleted files. (Something every wife should have! - oh so jaded).
Jason also went over the drawbacks for using freeware, such as virus's, having to manually update the software and no help available (unless through a blog style forum). Lastly the creators of the software don't really much money, so there is a move toward MICROCHARGING which will enable a governing body to charge 'everyone' for a software package - pool the amount - and distribute to the software owners as per usage.
